First time Buying a home when one spouse has great credit score and the other has bad credit? - md first time home buyer

My husband and I consider our first home. We are both first time buyers. However, he did have great credit and bad credit over 610 points. I am working on improving my credit card. It was in the army, when you get a VA loan account. We want a house in MD (PG or Montgomery Co.) Buy area. What is the best way to do this? Would it be better for us to get a mortgage in the application in whole or asking w / o me? Or is it automatically check my credit card? The best are the first buyers of the program for our situation? And what are the different types of loans for everyone in the state of MD?
